Malaysian Wedding Planning Checklist
Planning a wedding is easier when every task has its month. This checklist follows the order many Malaysian couples use, from agreeing on a budget with both families to the final week before the akad nikah and reception. Adjust the timing to your own date, and check official requirements with the relevant authorities, as they differ between states and change over time.
9 to 12 months before: families, date and budget
Agree on the wedding date and the events you will hold, such as the akad nikah, a reception for each side or one combined majlis. Set a realistic budget with both families and decide who pays for what, including hantaran and mas kahwin. Draft a first guest list early: the number of guests shapes the venue, the catering and the overall cost more than anything else.
6 to 9 months before: venue, catering and key vendors
Book the venue and caterer first, since popular dates fill early, especially during the school holidays. Then shortlist the pelamin and decoration, photographer and videographer, bridal make-up and attire. Ask every vendor for a written quotation that lists what is included, the deposit, the payment schedule and the cancellation terms, and compare packages on the same basis.
4 to 6 months before: marriage paperwork
Muslim couples usually complete a pre-marriage course (kursus pra-perkahwinan) and health screening before applying for permission to marry through the state Islamic religious department, and a couple from different states may need approval from both. Non-Muslim couples register their marriage with the National Registration Department (JPN). Requirements, forms and processing times vary, so check the latest rules with the relevant office early and keep copies of every document.
2 to 3 months before: invitations and guest list
Finalise the guest list with both families and decide whether each invitation covers one person, a couple or a household. Prepare your digital wedding invitation with the names, date, programme and map, set an RSVP deadline about two to three weeks before the event and share the link. Order printed cards only for guests who prefer them, and book door gifts once you have a firm guest estimate.
The final weeks: RSVP, confirmations and the big day
After the RSVP deadline, follow up privately with guests who have not replied and give the caterer your attendance total plus an agreed allowance. Confirm the timeline with every vendor and name one contact person for the day. In the final week, prepare the mas kahwin, the documents for the akad nikah, a small emergency kit and a simple schedule for family helpers, then rest well before the day.
